SMART

As Texas PTA marks 100 years advocating for student achievement, Start Meeting and Reading Together reflects our commitment to literacy awareness as a cornerstone of good schools and great students!

SMART encourages families to spend a few moments each day reading and also to reach out to other, less-fortunate families in the PTA spirit of volunteerism and caring.

Share books with Title I Schools, family/women’s shelters, child advocacy associations (i.e. CASA, Ronald McDonald House, Any Baby Can), Head Start, or children’s hospitals.

• Host a used book sale to raise money.
• Distribute books to early childhood centers or pediatric clinics.
• Host a Family Night with families choosing free books to take home or do a book exchange.
• Encourage high school students to recycle by donating books purchased for their English classes (possibly as a graduating senior activity).
• Donate funds in celebration of Texas PTA’s Centennial to local school libraries to purchase books.

Visit www.txpta.org/programs/smart/ for more information!

Environmental

To learn about, donate or volunteer to help with the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill visit the Audubon Institute website www.auduboninstitute.org.  The Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program is the primary responder for the state of Louisiana and it is coordinated by the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.  They have also partnered with a local t-shirt company to sell "Rescue Me" t-shirts for $20.00 with net proceeds benefiting the institute.
